Notion AI lives inside your workspace. It understands your pages, databases, and documents — it's not a generic chatbot. That's what makes it valuable.
It can:
- Summarize any long page into key points
- Fill database fields automatically
- Generate documents from a template
- Answer questions about content in your workspace
- Translate text instantly
It can't:
- Search the internet (no external access)
- Replace Claude or ChatGPT for complex reasoning
- See images or file attachments (text only)
How to Access Notion AI
Press / on any page → type "AI" → all AI options appear. You can also select text and the floating toolbar will show AI options.
The 6 Uses That Save the Most Time
1. Summarize meetings and long documents
Open any long page → /AI Summary → key points in seconds.
For meeting notes: create a template with a "Raw notes" section and an "AI Summary" section. Paste your notes, press /AI Summary in the summary section, and you have a structured summary in 10 seconds.
2. Fill databases with AI
This is the most underused feature. In any database, you can add an AI property that fills automatically.
Practical examples:
- CRM: "Client Summary" field → AI reads notes and generates a summary
- Projects: "Next Steps" field → AI analyzes tasks and suggests actions
- Content library: "AI Tags" field → AI automatically classifies each article
To create: in the database → Add property → AI → configure the prompt.
3. Generate document drafts
Type /AI Write and tell it what you need:
"Write a welcome email for new employees in a friendly but professional tone"
"Generate a project plan outline for a product launch with sections: objective, milestones, risks, and metrics"
The draft won't be perfect — but going from blank page to draft takes seconds instead of minutes.
4. Q&A about your workspace
In the Notion search bar → type a question in natural language:
"What are the active projects in the marketing team?" "Find all decisions we made about the website redesign"
Notion AI searches your entire workspace and answers with the right context.
5. On-the-fly translation
Select any text → Ask AI → Translate to English/Spanish/...
For international teams: create documents in one language and let Notion AI generate a translated version in another page. Not perfect, but functional for internal use.
6. Improve and reformat text
Select text and access:
- Improve writing: general correction + flow
- Fix spelling & grammar: corrections only
- Make shorter / Make longer: adjust length
