State of AI in Spain 2026
AI adoption rates, most-used tools, and budgets across Spanish-speaking markets.
ChatGPT dominates, but Claude is gaining fast
ChatGPT remains the most-used AI tool with 78% awareness and 54% active monthly use. Claude 3.5/4.x has grown from 8% to 31% in 12 months, driven by its longer context window and better instruction-following for Spanish content. Gemini sits at 29% monthly use, largely through Google Workspace integrations.
Budget allocation is shifting toward specialized tools
In 2025, 68% of AI spend went to general-purpose chatbots (ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro). In 2026, that proportion dropped to 51% as teams added specialized tools: SEO AI (Semrush AI, Surfer), video tools (HeyGen, Synthesia), and coding assistants (Cursor, GitHub Copilot). Average monthly spend per team rose from $84 to $127 (+51%).
The skills gap is the #1 barrier
When asked "what is preventing wider AI adoption in your team," 38% cited cost, 29% cited lack of skills and training, and 21% cited trust and accuracy concerns. Only 12% cited privacy/legal. The implication: tools with low learning curves (Notion AI, Canva AI) see faster uptake in non-technical teams.
LatAm is growing 2.3× faster than Spain
Spanish-speaking LatAm markets (Mexico, Colombia, Argentina, Chile) showed 2.3× faster AI tool adoption growth than Spain in H1 2026. Mexico leads at 41% year-over-year growth in AI SaaS spend. Price sensitivity is higher but willingness to pay for verified tools (with reviews in Spanish) is strong.
Freemium converts better than trials
Tools with a genuine freemium tier (MailerLite, Notion, Canva) convert 3.2× more Spanish users than tools with 7-14 day free trials. The cultural preference for "try before you pay" is stronger in Spanish markets than in the US or UK.
